推理十誡(Ten Commandments of Detection)，由資深編輯暨作家隆納德·諾克斯(Ronald Knox)於1928年提出。

1.凶手須在故事前半段亮相，但要防止讀者完全得知他的思絡。
2.故事中不可存有超自然力量。
3.最多僅能出現一個秘室或秘道。
4.故事中不應出現不存在的毒藥、以及太複雜需要長篇解說的犯案工具。
5.有色人種中不可有中國人。(當時的人認對中國的了解還是相當的少，大多數的人都認為中國人一定會功夫、奇門遁甲等技能，所以才訂下此誡。)
6.決不可透過意外事件和直覺能力來破案。
7.偵探不能犯罪。
8.偵探不應把焦點集中在無關案情的線索，避免誤導讀者。
9.偵探身旁的忠心朋友，思維應該坦白；其智商最好在一般人之下。
10.除非先寫出有雙胞胎，否則凶手不准是雙胞胎。

原文：

1.The criminal must be mentioned in the early part of the story, but must not be anyone whose thoughts the reader has been allowed to know.
2.All supernatural or preternatural agencies are ruled out as a matter of course.
3.Not more than one secret room or passage is allowable.
4.No hitherto undiscovered poisons may be used, nor any appliance which will need a long scientific explanation at the end.
5.No Chinaman must figure in the story.
6.No accident must ever help the detective, nor must he ever have an unaccountable intuition which proves to be right.
7.The detective himself must not commit the crime.
8.The detective is bound to declare any clues which he may discover.
9.The stupid friend of the detective, the Watson, must not conceal from the reader any thoughts which pass through his mind: his intelligence must be slightly, but very slightly, below that of the average reader.
10.Twin brothers, and doubles generally, must not appear unless we have been duly prepared for them.

推理小說二十則由范·達因提出。

1.必須明確、公正的將所有線索呈現給偵探與讀者。
2.除了凶手的詭計，不得用寫作手法誤導讀者。
3.故事中不能摻有戀愛成分。
4.偵探和凶手不能是同一人。
5.必須經由合理的推理緝凶。
6.偵探為了破案就必須要有探案的行為。
7.必須要有命案來引發讀者的正義感。
8.不得使用占卜等超能力來緝凶。
9.一部作品裡，只能有一個（主要的）偵探。
10.凶手必須要有相當的戲份。
11.凶手不得是奴僕之輩。
12.雖然可以有幫兇，但只該塑造一個主要的凶手。
13.凶手不得以大型犯罪組織為後台。
14.不得以（尚）不存在的手法行凶。
15.必須貫徹唯一的真相，並為此提供讀者線索。
16.不宜使用太過華麗的文采。
17.凶手不得是（有案底的）慣犯。
18.不應以死者其實是自殺或意外死亡收場。
19.凶手應有屬於自己的犯罪動機
20.（為了湊成偶數）以下手法太過常見，務必避免使用：
(1)凶案現場發現煙蒂，所以凶手應是癮君子。
(2)以各種手段脅迫凶手自白。
(3)製作假指紋。
(4)用替身製造不在場證明。
(5)（被害人的）狗不吠表示凶手是熟人。
(6)凶手是雙胞胎（之一）。
(7)使用瞬間致死的毒藥。
(8)凶案現場在警方來到時才變成密室。
(9)問案時，透過嫌疑犯的反應來緝凶。
(10)結案前，偵探破解暗號（死前留言）找出凶手。
